So I have not been back for a while. Lots of things happening at the office. Massive changes to the department, my transfer, then loss of my job before my transfer. Then getting a new job for double the pay. ETC ETC.
However I have built my ESXi Server and got my TechNet Subscription!
Here are the specs of the server:
- AMD Athlon II 3.0 GHz (Link)
- ASUS M4A78LT-M (Link)
- 8GBs DDR3 Memory
- Intel Pro 10/100/1000 Nic (Link)
- VM Ware ESXi 4.1 Host OS
I had a number of hard drives lying around to use. Two 1TB SATA Hitachi Drives, Two 360GB Western Digital IDE Drives. Also I needed to buy the Intel Pro Nic. VMWare usually never supports OEM onboard NICs. I have read enough that my Linux skills are not up to snuff to keep at it before the server was built. I learned the hardware in the first week. Finally broke down and got the Intel Network Card. Once installed, ESXi install was a snap. Low priority to go back and get the nic to function.Everything else of the server works excellently.
I got the Standard Microsoft Technet Subscription. Now Microsoft has made some changes to it from the subs of years gone by. The change has been limiting the number of installs for Office and Windows OSes. This has been in response to people figuring out the savings one gets with just a $200 Subscription and the number of installs of OS and Office. So ok Redmond has limited the installs to Two Keys. Thats fine. I have been told that you still get 10 installs for each key when registered. This still pays for itself just to update my wifes computer to Windows 7.
I am working with my employer to get VMWare Certified. They are willing to pay for the classes and the tests. This will be a huge kick ass option when they do it.
The new job his heavy VMWare. The company has pretty much backed VMWare for everything. It needs to go through a lot more hurtles in order to be a physical machine. Right now I am overseeing 1300+ Guest VMs. Not too shabby. I get to play heavy with VMWare Licensing and new host builds all the time.
